Legalize Marijuana use?

Marijuana, is a very dangerous drug, for one thing it has 20 times the amount of carcinogens than tobacco, Lung Cancer anyone? Colorado is learning about this drug and auto accidents (DUI). There have been a few studies that show just what kind of problems arise from the use of this drug. Here are just 2:

“Cannabis–‐Related ED Visits Rise in States With Legalized Use,” Academy of Addiction Psychiatry (AAAP), 25th Annual Meeting, (www.ibhinc.org) December 2014

“Cannabis Use Is Quantitatively Associated with Nucleus Accumbens and Amygdala Abnormalities in Young Adult Recreational Users,” Journal of Neuroscience, 16 April 2014, 34(16): 5529-5538

The problems are escalating greatly in states that have legalized use of this drug. In young people there are definite changes in the brain. Please also note that with prolonged use, you will probably develop the old “Cigarette Cough”, this leads to lung problems later in life such as Emphysema and cancer. Today’s cannabis is much stronger that it was in the 60’s. In some strains up to 30% stronger THC. This is a drug that leads to all kinds of problems, not the least of which is psychosis. The Emergency Rooms in places where cannabis is legal, are experiencing a big uptick in overdose cases, where psychosis is one of the many problems seen.

Now I am not against people being able to do those things that seem right to them, but I am also not willing to see medical costs skyrocket as this stuff gets more and more use across our nation. There is a reason for the ban on these drugs, and it is because of what they do to people. Read the history of why drugs were banned in this country over a hundred years ago, it was not a pretty picture.

These politicians don’t care about the science, they only care about taxing the industry created by the legalization of this drug. They claim that they are doing away with crime, but the black market is thriving, because of the taxes on the product. Criminals don’t pay sales tax. The politicians (criminals) that want to legalize this stuff are only interested in their own ability to control the population, they don’t care that it will cause people to die horrible deaths just as they yell and scream about tobacco. Check out what the true science tells us, then, if you want to kill your children, destroy more lives including your own, continue down this path. The libertarians are wrong on this one, I like Stossel but he is dead wrong on legalization of drugs.

Confiscation is not the answer

I hear the Mayor of NYC and the governor of New York State screaming about the need to confiscate guns, take guns away from law-abiding citizens so that crime will go down. The real idiocy with these things is that Law Abiding Citizens are not the ones committing the crimes, with guns. The ones who commit gun crimes are those who don’t care about laws in the first place, they are called criminals.

The history of gun control is that it does not work, crime increases when citizens do not have guns with which to protect themselves from criminals with guns and other weapons that destroy lives. Where I live is a prime example, when we are out feeding our animals, we never know what or who we will meet up with. I do know that the border patrol has caught a number of drug smugglers and people smugglers in our county, some on our property. These people are armed with semi-auto and automatic (assault weapon) weapons. You see that is the other problem with this discussion, one side seems to want to make any gun an assault while the other side wants to make every gun OK to own. Somewhere in the middle is where I am. I own handguns, and semi-automatic rifles and a single shot 30-06 rifle.

None of my guns is an “assault” weapon, because none of my guns can be fired on full automatic. Yet it is said that anyone who owns a gun that can hold a magazine of more than 10 rounds is an assault weapon. Wrong! Assault weapons are those weapons that are capable of firing either one round at a time of 10 rounds at a time. The law says that those weapons are not available for sale to the general public, in other words, I can’t buy an assault weapon even if I wanted one, which to be perfectly honest I do not.

Interestingly enough, criminals seem to be able to get and use assault type weapons in committing their crimes.

The UK has taken guns away from their citizens, the police who used to go around with only a club as their protection and weapon. Are now armed with guns, simply because the criminals who they have to go up against began using guns once the citizenry had no way to protect themselves. So it seems that if you take away the guns from those who will obey the law, then those who do not obey the law will be able to get guns anyway, and are more than willing to use them in the commission of crimes. So, once again I find myself asking why are we trying to remove a deterrent from our law-abiding citizenry when it does actually cut down on violent crime? Just look at the Florida, when the citizens were not allowed to have guns, gun crime was rampant in the state, when they passed the law that allowed citizens to begin carrying concealed weapons, violent crime went down. In every state where this has been tried, violent crime has decreased. Where are there more gun related deaths? Try Chicago, Washington D. C. and other places were guns are not allowed in the hands of law-abiding citizens, but the criminals have plenty of firepower.

So in this debate, let us scrap the “feel good” stuff and begin to look carefully at what it is we are trying to accomplish. So called “Gun Free Zones” are the places were these crimes happen, over and again. Whether it is a movie theater or a College campus or an elementary school. How do we deter these things or at least protect those who are the innocent victims? We make sure that there are armed persons there to protect those places. Not necessarily, teachers but persons who are trained in the use of guns and are willing to use them to protect those teachers and kids. There are many who are trained. Most of us who served any time in the military, know about and respect guns, and how they are to be handled. In States were Concealed carry is acceptable, you have a group of folks who are able to protect themselves and others.

I know that I would be happy to spend a day or two a week in our school system to protect those who are there to learn and to grow, and there are teachers who also do not want to carry guns, as well as those who do have the license. Let us use the resources we have to protect those who cannot protect themselves, it will be a deterrent when the school or theater is no longer a “gun free zone.”

What do you think? Does this make sense, or do you have a different perspective?

Read an interesting article today

Not that I haven’t read interesting articles every day, just that this one kind of made me realize that there are a lot of things going on that we don’t talk about much. It had to do with women and self protection. Women are called the weaker sex, but that is not always true, sometimes they can be stronger than men. Of course they can always be stronger than we men in some ways, including maturing sooner than boys do.
Of course that is not the gist of the article, it rather has to do with the fact that there are predators out there, and that, “truth be told” a piece of paper that says you will be arrested if you come within 50 feet of this woman, is useless when the perpetrator has come into her space and beat the living hell out of her. This article talks about self defense, and it talks about guns. Now I am a believer in the 2nd Amendment and I think that carrying a gun is not a crime, it is your right as a citizen of this nation.
Now to the article, it does say that the first thing you should do is learn about your options, go to the police and file an order of protection against the person you are fearful of. Then it talks about learning about the legal issues of carrying a gun for protection. Finally it speaks to learning what kind of gun fits you as a woman. Preferably find a woman instructor who will be able to help you with this, and teach you the proper way of using your gun. You also have to go through one other process, that is: Can you use that gun to kill a fellow human being if that is your only choice. That is the one truth that I think too many people don’t think through. If you are going to carry a gun, if the situation is such that you fear for your life, can you kill another human being who is trying to kill you?
Personally, I think that you must be ready to defend yourself and if necessary, to kill the person who is attacking you, why else would you carry a gun, or a knife? If you cannot honestly answer that question in the affirmative, get some pepper spray, or a tazer, do not carry a loaded gun unless you really are ready to use it.
